Arend van Dam debuteerde 1989 met het Pietenboek. Sindsdien heeft hij meer dan honderd kinderboeken geschreven. Als geen ander verwoordt hij maatschappelijke thema’s door middel van spannende, leerzame verhalen voor kinderen. Samen met illustrator Alex de Wolf boekte hij veel succes met de bekende serie voorleesbundels, waarvan het eerste deel, Lang geleden… bekroond werd met een Zilveren Griffel. Na het succes van de Lang geleden-serie volgde de geliefde AVI-serie Zelf lezen met Lang geleden… In 2018 verscheen het met de Archeon Thea Beckmanprijs en een Zilveren Griffel bekroonde De reis van Syntax Bosselman. In 2020 schrijft Arend van Dam het Kinderboekenweekgeschenk, met als thema 'En toen?'.
