This is the first published biography of Richard Bore and it paints a vivid picture of the man, his life and career. From his humble beginnings in a family of Shropshire labourers he started his working life as a coach painter in Birmingham. His career developed rapidly, culminating with his appointment as the first Carriage Superintendent of Britain’s premier railway company. He later established himself as a leading citizen of Wolverton, a bustling railway town in Buckinghamshire. Bore’s reputation was sealed when he designed what was to become Queen Victoria’s favourite railway vehicle, described as a “palace on wheels”, and subsequently travelled with her on her annual journeys to and from Balmoral.
