It's 1919. Jess Edwards has the yen to leave Lockwood, a big estate in Clarke County, Virginia. A native of New York, he has tried ranching in Oklahoma, panning for gold in Colorado, and is now a farmhand in Virginia as a favor to his friend. Jess is ready to move on. He isn't sure what he's looking for, but he's sure he's going to find it in California, the land of opportunity. Fannie Edwards, his wife of less than a year, loves the cabin in which they live and has no desire to leave their way of life. Future or folly? What does lie in store for Jess and Fannie?
